APPENDIX TWO: CASE STUDY INTERVIEWS

In each of the 4 case study areas, an interview programme was carried out with relevant professionals and with service users. All interviews with service users were conducted on an individual basis, while those with professionals were carried out both individually and in focus groups.

Interviews with professionals

In each area, interviews were carried out with local authority, voluntary sector and RSL staff. Where specialist services for homeless people were in place, interviews were also carried out with staff from these services, e.g. health visitors with dedicated remits, educational workers and dedicated families projects. Interviewees thus included:

  • Homeless strategy and services staff
  • Homelessness officers
  • Hostels staff
  • Tenancy support staff
  • Health service staff
  • Supporting People Officers
  • Voluntary sector projects providing accommodation and/or support
  • Local authority services providing accommodation and support for particular client groups
  • Registered social landlords
  • Community mental health staff
  • Children and families services
  • Throughcare and aftercare staff.

Interviews with service users

While the research target had been to interview up to 10 service users with an assessment of intentionality in each case study area, this target did not prove possible to meet. This was due to the differing levels of intentionality decisions across the 4 areas, coupled with variations in the ease of making contact with such service users and the differing response rates to the contact made requesting participation. The number of service users interviewed by area therefore differed, and totalled 29 across the areas. The number of service users interviewed by area was:

  • eight in case study area A
  • nine in case study area B
  • six in case study area C
  • six in case study D.
