APPENDIX 8: NATIONALLY FUNDED CLINICAL SCIENTIST TRAINING SCHEMES

  1. The current Grade A training scheme has operated successfully since 1994. The scheme is administered by lead trainers in hospitals and is commissioned and performance managed by NSD.
  2. Trainees are appointed on either three or four year contracts (depending upon the length of training required) to supernumerary posts based in centres around Scotland that are approved for training purposes by the appropriate professional bodies and funded by NSD. A large part of the training takes place in a hospital environment where trainees are supervised by a consultant clinical scientist. However trainees also attend specific University MSC Courses on a block release basis. Trainees undergo formal annual assessment and at the end of the training period in Grade A, successful trainees are awarded a Certificate of Completion of Training. There is then one further year in the training scheme within Grade B which takes trainees up to state registration. After this trainees can apply for Grade B clinical scientist posts in open competition.
  3. The numbers of trainees taken on each year in each scheme is set out below.
  4. NSD's responsibilities in relation to the Grade A/B training schemes are to plan their strategic development and ensure that they are sustainable and meet assessed needs. We therefore work closely with all clinical scientist training schemes.

Clinical Scientists Training

The Grade A training schemes were extended from 2003/04 up to state registration within Grade B.
