Housing Trends in Scotland: Quarter Ending 31 March 2006

This bulletin presents data on housing activity in Scotland for January to March 2006. It includes information on public sector house sales, new house building, and local authority lettings and evictions. Due to housing stock transfers, figures for local authority dwellings do not include authorities with total stock transfers from 2003 quarter 2 onwards.

The main points to emerge from the bulletin are as follows:

  1. New house building: 9,460 new dwellings were started during the period January to March 2006, 518 (6%) more than during the same period in the previous year. 6,280 dwellings were completed, 673 (10%) less than during the same period in 2005.
  2. Sales of social sector dwellings: A total of 2,213 public authority dwellings were sold to sitting tenants in the period January to March 2006, a decrease of 512 (19%) on the same period in 2005.
  3. Lettings and evictions: During the quarter January to March 2006, there were 8,374 permanent lettings of local authority dwellings, 409 (5%) more than during the same quarter in the previous year. There were 274 evictions of local authority tenants this quarter, 26 (10%) more than during January to March 2005.
  4. Houses in multiple occupation: During 2005-06, 2,377 applications were received in respect of the mandatory licensing scheme for houses in multiple occupation.
  5. Housing for older people: Public authorities and housing associations provided 33,212 sheltered, 3,893 very sheltered and 13,413 medium dependency dwellings for older people as at 31 March 2005, representing 1,778 (4%) more units than at 31 March 2004.
