Global Atmosphere

1) A new dataset has been used that extends back to 1914.

2) The 1910s exclude 1910-1913 and the 2000s exclude 2006-2009.

3) IPCC Third Assessment: Climate Change 2001. A Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

4) UK Climate Impacts Programme (2002). Climate Change Scenarios for the United Kingdom (UKCIP02).

5) Emissions are weighted by Global Warming Potential ( GWP). GWP accounts for the potency of the gas as well as the amount emitted. For example, PFCs and SF 6 are released in small quantities, but are long-lived and therefore highly potent. The estimated uncertainty in GWP for 2003 is ±23%.

6) Hydrofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons and sulphur hexafluoride.

7) The 2003 estimates are subject to uncertainties of: CO 2 = ±6.6%, methane = ±14.6%, HFC = ±21%, PFC = ±13%, SF6 6 = ±16%. For more details see Baggott et al. (2005).

8) Figures may not sum due to rounding.

9) Includes emissions from land use and forestry.

10) Emissions from military, off-shore industry, aviation and shipping are not included in the Scottish inventory.

11) Includes emissions which have not been allocated to Scotland, England, Wales or Northern Ireland.

12) SL Baggott, L Brown, R Milne, TP Murrells, N Passant, DG Thistlethwaite (2005). Greenhouse Gas Inventories for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland: 1990 - 2003. Netcen, AEA Technology. AEAT/ENV/R/2037.

13) In accordance with the inventory specification, emission estimates due to road transport are based on UK sales of fuel. These have been apportioned on the basis of kilometres travelled in each part of the UK.

14) Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs: e-Digest of Environmental Statistics.

15) Stratospheric ozone should not be confused with tropospheric (ground level) ozone.
