Glossary of Terms

Alternate Weekly Collection

This term refers to a collection system whereby recyclate collections alternate with residual collections - i.e. both are fortnightly, but the householder receives a collection (either recyclate or residual) every week.

Cost Effectiveness Analysis

Analysis that compares the costs of alternative ways of producing the same or similar outputs.

Diversion Rate

The amount of material (in kg/hh/yr) that is recycled instead of going to landfill.

Frequency of Collection

This describes the time period between collections at the kerbside.

Householder Participation

Estimate of the percentage number of households in each pilot scheme area that were utilising the recycling scheme. Based on data from the SWAG mid-pilot survey

Householder Satisfaction

Percentage of respondents to SWAG surveys who said they were using the scheme and were satisfied with the service provided.

Landfill

Disposal of waste into engineered cells

Percentage Rate of Recycling

The amount of recyclate collected expressed as a percentage of the overall household waste stream.

Pilot Scheme Diversion Rate

The amount of material (in kg/hh/week) that was diverted during the operation of a pilot scheme.

Projected Diversion Rate

The diversion rate (kg/hh/year) predicted if a pilot scheme were to be rolled out on a larger scale.

The partnership of SISTech and LEEP.

Recyclate

Materials that are nominated for recycling by individual councils

Recycling Point

Local sites with large banks for householders to bring their recyclable materials to.

Residual Waste

The fraction of the householder waste stream that is not targeted for recycling.

Rollout

The implementation of each pilot scheme on a large scale.
