Chapter 9 Outcome

Any measurement of outcome was seen to be very difficult to achieve. Teachers and Road Safety Officers felt that they might just be able to measure the children's knowledge of this subject but could not say whether this translated into changes in attitude or behaviour with any reliability at all. Most said that they would not know how to measure this.

"At the end of the day it's not about filling in the worksheet. It's about crossing the road"
Teacher

What they can measure is what they have done and perhaps who has developed an understanding of the issues being addressed.

Some also commented that they had not been using the resource for long enough to know of any impact on the children.

The self-completion survey included questions relating to outcome. Given the comments received during interviews about the difficulties in making such judgements, the replies should be treated with some caution.

Teachers were most likely to provide a comment in relation to the effect on children's' knowledge of road safety. 47% said it had made a significant improvement and a further 36% said it had made a small improvement.

There was a more cautious rating of the effect Streetsense has had on children's attitude although this was still positive. Just over a third (34%) said it had made a significant improvement to children's attitude to road safety with a further 44% saying it had made a small improvement.

Teachers were least likely to comment on the effect the resource has had on children's behaviour with nearly a third (31%) indicating 'Don't know' to this question. Only 18% felt able to say that it had made a significant effect on children's behaviour, although 46% felt it had made a small improvement.

Key Findings

  • Outcome was recognised as being very difficult to determine.
  • The resource was seen as having the most significant impact on knowledge of road safety where 47% felt it had made a significant improvement.
  • A third indicated a significant improvement in attitude as a result of the resource.
  • Only 18% indicated a significant improvement in behaviour.
