Section G: Writing attainment estimates
G.1 National writing attainment estimates, based on teachers' judgments
Schools were invited to submit a level judgment for writing for each pupil sampled for involvement in the survey. Judgments were submitted for around 80% of the sampled pupils. Table G1 presents the national picture of writing attainment based on the class teachers' judgments. The data have been weighted to adjust for sample imbalances in gender and deprivation representation within authorities, and further weighted to adjust for the over-representation of the reporting authorities in the national sample (see Section B for details).

* For 'all pupils' the standard error is between 0.1 and 0.9 percentage points for non-zero estimates, and between 0.1 and 1.3 percentage points for each non-zero gender estimate.
At all stages there were significant differences in the attainment ratings of boys and girls nationally, as Table G1 shows, and in all authorities. Girls' writing was in general more highly rated than the boys'.

Tables G2a to G2p record corresponding results by authority. In all cases, the data have been weighted to adjust for sample imbalances in gender and deprivation representation within the individual authorities.
