Table 26: Local authority school milk schemes, 2004-05

Please note that provision of free school milk is a voluntary scheme. Schools who participate in the scheme are eligible for an E.U. subsidy meaning the actual cost to local authorities will, in most cases, be less than what is reported here.

Data is for primary, secondary and special schools only. Some local authorities provided milk to the pre-school sector only.

(1) The figures represent the gross expenditure ( i.e. not taking account of any income from E.U. subsidies). In some cases this may include expenditure on milk not used in schemes. Making inter-authority comparisons of the expenditure data is not advisable without knowing exactly what each authority has included/excluded in the figures.

Figures are calculated based on audited data returned by the 32 Scottish local authorities. Blanket guidance for definitions of what should be recorded under "gross expenditure on school milk" is not provided.
