12. Diversion from Prosecution (Chart 31 and Tables 51-53, 72 and 73)
12.1 A total of 1,064 Diversion from Prosecution ( DP) cases commenced in 2004-05, a decrease of 21 per cent from the 2003-04 total of 1,340. These 1,064 cases relate to 1,047 individuals. Other DP totals for 2004-05 included 1,521 referrals (a 29 per cent decrease on 2003-04), 1,378 assessments (27 per cent decrease), 760 cases successfully completed (26 per cent decrease) and 148 (30 per cent decrease) cases referred to drug treatment/education.
12.2 Fifty-five per cent of DP cases commenced in 2004-05 involved males. Females receiving Diversion from Prosecution tended to be older than males, with 55 per cent of being aged over 30 compared with 39 per cent for males. Conversely, 47 per cent of cases for males and 23 per cent for females involved persons aged under 21 years.
12.3 Forty-five per cent of DP cases commenced in 2004-05 related to offenders who were unemployed or not seeking employment. Males were more likely to be employed than females, 21 per cent and 17 per cent respectively.
