8 Size of derelict and urban vacant sites
8.1 Table 15 shows the relationship between the date when a site was first identified and the size of the site. The average size of sites identified before 1981 is 3.5 hectares compared to an average of 1.6 hectares for sites identified between 2001 and 2005.

8.2 Table 16 shows the distribution of urban vacant and derelict sites by local authority area. It shows that 42 per cent (1,713 sites) of reported urban vacant and derelict sites are between 0.1 and 0.5 hectares in size and only 4 per cent (156 sites) of reported sites are 10 hectares or larger. The average size of urban vacant or derelict sites varies greatly between authorities, ranging from 0.3 hectares in the Shetland Isles to 9.7 hectares in West Lothian.
