7 Location of derelict land

7.1 The survey covers derelict sites both within settlements (as defined in the latest council approved local plans) and the countryside. Map 2 (on page 22 overleaf) shows the location of derelict sites across the central belt area of Scotland in 2005. It uses the OS Grid references provided by each local authority for the derelict sites within their administrative areas.

7.2 The distribution of derelict land within settlements of 2,000 and over in population, under 2,000 in population and within the countryside is shown split by local authority area in Table 13. In Scotland as a whole, over half the recorded area of derelict land is in the countryside (52 per cent). Of the 3,668 hectares of derelict land located within settlements, 3,285 hectares (90 per cent) are within settlements of 2,000 and over in population and the remaining 383 hectares (10 per cent) are within settlements with populations of under 2,000.

7.3 The local authorities with the largest areas of derelict land recorded in settlements for the 2005 survey were North Lanarkshire (688 hectares) and Glasgow City (653 hectares). Together they account for 37 per cent of all settlement based derelict land. The local authorities with the largest areas of derelict land within the countryside were Highland (741 hectares) and Renfrewshire (733 hectares). Together they account for 38 per cent of all countryside based derelict land. The average size of derelict sites within settlements is 2.7 hectares, compared to an average size of 8.1 hectares for countryside sites.
