3 Ownership of derelict and urban vacant land
3.1 Table 7 shows the ownership of derelict and urban vacant sites, including a comparison of 1996 and 2005 data. For derelict land, most sites have a single private owner (70 per cent in 2005, compared with 61 per cent in 1996). In 2005, 8 per cent of derelict or urban vacant land where the owner was known was in multiple ownership. 1,501 hectares of land (14 per cent of the total amount of derelict and urban vacant land recorded in 2005) had one or more unknown owners. Since 1996, known public ownership of derelict land has fallen by over 700 hectares, while known private ownership increased by over 500 hectares.
