10 Development Potential of derelict and urban vacant land
10.1 Tables 20 and 21 show the development potential of derelict and urban vacant land within settlements and the countryside. 37 per cent of derelict land (with known development potential) within settlements is developable in the short term compared to 15 per cent of derelict land within the countryside. Land is developable in the short term if there is an expectation of development within 5 years. At the other end of the scale, 10 per cent of derelict land within settlements was viewed as being uneconomic to develop with a soft-end use thought to be more suitable. The comparative figure for derelict land within the countryside is 22 per cent. The 'unknown' values are accounted for due to a small number of local authorities being unable to provide development potential information for the majority (if not all) of their sites.

2. Unknown values are excluded from the calculation of percentage values
3. This refers to urban vacant land in settlements of 2,000 and over and derelict land in all settlements.
4. Settlements as defined by local authorities in their latest council approved local plans (see Annex Section A.7).
