This document gives the latest figures for local authority spending on school education, together with revised figures for 2003-04.

The main findings are :-

• Gross revenue expenditure in 2004-05 on primary education was £1.5 billion, or £3,855 per pupil. This was an increase per pupil of nine per cent from 2003-04, or £314 per pupil.
• Gross revenue expenditure in 2004-05 on secondary education was £1.7 billion, or £5,428 per pupil. This was an increase per pupil of seven per cent from 2003-04, or £364 per pupil.
• Gross revenue expenditure in 2004-05 on special education was £435 million. This was an increase of eleven per cent from 2003-04.
• Pre-school education and other revenue expenditure of about £490 million resulted in a total local authority education expenditure in 2004-05 of £4.2 billion. This was an eight per cent increase from 2003-04.
• Capital expenditure not funded from revenue in 2004-05 on primary and secondary schools was £183 million, or £255 per pupil. This was an increase per pupil of twenty per cent from 2003-04, or £42 per pupil. This does not include PPP projects.
• Capital expenditure not funded from revenue in 2004-05 on special education was £3.3 million. This was an increase of five per cent from 2003-04. This does not include PPP projects.
• £2.7 billion of expenditure was devolved to head teachers in 2004-05, a ten per cent increase on 2003-04.
