7. The Use of Multiple Rods and Rod Rests

A major obstacle to the development of coarse fishing in Scotland is the current definition of set lines. In Scotland, rod and line becomes a set line as soon as the rod has been laid to rest; elsewhere in the UK, the use of rod rests is permitted, lines only becoming set if the rod is laid down and left unattended. The issue of the use of more than one rod, which is commonplace in coarse angling, has also been the subject of significant debate in the angling sector.

Fishing using rod rests is legal elsewhere in the UK, and in Ireland, both of which have much better developed coarse fisheries than Scotland. In addition, coarse anglers often use up to 4 rods, set to fish different baits

and often at different depths, in their attempts to catch the target fish species.
