The Water Framework Directive and Scotland: Key Dates
The key requirements are:
- To implement the necessary measures to prevent the deterioration of the status of all bodies of surface water.
- To protect, enhance and restore all bodies of surface water with the aim of achieving good surface water status by 2015.
- To protect and enhance artificial and heavily modified water bodies with the aim of achieving good ecological potential and good surface water chemical status by 2015.
Key Dates for Scotland
2006 - Introduction of Controlled Activities Regulations
2006 - Monitoring programmes operational
Consult on River Basin Management Plan ( RBMP) production work programme
2007 - Significant Water Management Issues Report
2008 - Publish draft RBMP for consultation.
2009 - Publish first RBMP including:
a) Environmental objectives
b) Programme of measures
2012 - Programme of measures operational
2015 - Achieve objectives of good water status in Scotland's water bodies
