ANNEX B: DELIVERY OF TRANSITION PLAN AS SET OUT IN THE JURA REPORT

The 2004/05 transition year saw the centres making progress towards a collaborative network and improving their own physical infrastructure.

Progress at each centre against Transition Year plans in the Jura Report is set out below.

Our Dynamic Earth

Sensation

1. Complete sound-proofing (April 2004)

Completed; late licence from City of Edinburgh Council now restored, allowing renewed drive to attract corporate hospitality

1. Immediate upgrade to selected exhibition area required

1&2 being managed simultaneously and currently proceeding in line with expectations. Necessary building warrants for cafe relocation been approved and main contractors appointed. Visits currently underway regarding exhibit development

2. Secure partner funding for ReDiscover project

Achieved - Scottish Executive is funding partner

2. Relocate Café and improve visitor orientation

3. Immediate upgrade to selected exhibition area

Completed; and further innovative ways being found to upgrade more exhibits through collaborations with external private/public bodies

3. During beginning of business plan period revisit the requirement for Marketing staff

New Marketing Manager took up post on 17 January 2005

Glasgow Science Centre

Satrosphere Science Centre

1. Immediately undertake enhancement in retail income from new stocking policy

1. Secure partner funding for ReDiscover project

All match funding secured

2. Immediate upgrade to selected exhibition area

In progress but part of ongoing exhibit management

2. Immediate upgrade to selected exhibition area once full funding package secured

3. Immediately undertake and complete full review of staffing levels and costs

Completed (should be a continuous management practice)

3. Fully investigate costs of addressing weaknesses in building fabric and performance (works undertaken summer 2004)

Decorative and other remedial work undertaken

4. Reduce full- time staff by approximately 20 FTE and reassess part-time terms and conditions (this process may take up to one year to complete)

Completed (should be a continuous review item)

4. Review all staffing costs using other centres as a model

All salaries were reviewed and most increased to current market rates based on Jura-obtained figures

5. Reconfigure entrance area to provide enhanced reception and retail space and other access and circulation improvements
