Description of project
Lumphanan Community Council has undertaken to manage the local public toilets (with opening over the 6 month summer period during daylight hours). While structural maintenance has been provided by Aberdeenshire Council, LCC has organised daily unlocking and locking and daily cleaning of the toilets.
Context - describe the background to the project
Aberdeenshire Council has been forced to close many public toilets or restrict hours of opening of all those apart from points of excessively high demand or, for example, tourist amenity. This move has, we believe, been highly unwelcome and our community council wished to maintain the local facility.
What are the aims and objectives of the project?
Providing a valuable local public facility. Numerous visitors to Lumphanan and local residents alike have bemoaned the absence of a village public toilet.
Timescale - over what timescale had the project been developed?
We have been discussing the project at Community Council meetings for around two years.
Action - Explain the process and action taken
Discussions at the Community Council, enthusiastic support from our local Councillor, renovation work conducted by Aberdeenshire Council and financial support from Aberdeenshire Council led to the local community being able to re-open the public toilets over the summer 6-months.
Explain the role of the key partners
Lumphanan Community Council has recruited a local resident to open and close the toilets and undertake daily cleaning to a required standard. Aberdeenshire Council undertakes any structural repairs and provides a grant towards costs.
Results - what results were achieved?
After closure for a number of years, 2005 saw the re-opening of the public toilets at the start of the summer.
Conclusion - In summary, why does this piece of work merit an Award?
Across the region, public toilets are mostly remaining closed and falling into disrepair. Our local initiative has achieved the very unusual event of re-opening of a public facility under local management.
