Looking forward

A modern Dutch 'woonerf' (home zone), Culemborg, Holland
The PAN encourages a more flexible and innovative approach to the design of new residential streets to support the Executive's aspirations for higher quality design in new development.
Residential streets should provide an environment in which people can safely interact with each other and take pleasure in their surroundings. Streets should not be seen as hostile and unhealthy spaces.
Our perception of place is highly influenced by the surrounding buildings, as much as by the streetscape. We should, therefore, try to achieve a much more integrated environment between transport patterns, streetscape and buildings. Consequently, it will be important to monitor the application of new ideas, to assess what works well and in what circumstances.
the combination of layout of buildings, streets and spaces should create local identity, and positivelycontribute to the character of our places
