On 31 March 2005 there were 332 care homes for adults with learning disabilities. These homes offered a total of 2,840 places and had 2,516 residents. Just over 65 per cent (216) of the care homes in this client group and 53 per cent (1,498) of the registered places were in the voluntary sector whilst of the remaining care homes 68 (20.5 per cent) were in the private sector and 48 (14.5 per cent) were run by local authorities. The average size of these care homes varied from 7 places in the voluntary sector to 10 places in local authority homes to 13 places in privately operated care homes.

Since March 2000, the number of care homes has fallen by 57 from 389 in 2000 to the current level of 332 homes. There has been a corresponding drop in the number of places from 3,685 to 2,840. This is a reduction of 845 places (23 per cent) and there has been a corresponding fall in the average size of care homes over the same period. In March 2000 the average size of a care home was

9.5 places but by March 2005 this had fallen to 8.6 places.

The number of residents in care homes for adults with learning disabilities has fallen by 846 from 3,362 in March 2000 to 2,516 in March 2005. Table 17 excludes information on homes deregistering to housing support which can be found in annex F.
