On the most recent census night there were 112 care homes in Scotland for adults with mental health problems. Of these more than 80 per cent (90 homes) were run by voluntary organisations. The 112 care homes offered a total of 1,237 places, 1110 of which were occupied by residents whilst 114 were vacant and the remaining 13 were unavailable.

The 90 care homes in the voluntary sector offered a total of 821 places and had an average of 9 places each. This compares to an average size of 20 places amongst the 17 privately owned care homes which offered a total of 335 places and housed 309 residents. The 5 local authority run care homes offered a total of 81 places and were, on average, 16 places in size.

Since the last census in September 2004, there has been little change in the number of care homes, registered places or residents in this client group. Indeed, since March 2002 the number of care homes has fallen by 3 from 115, the number of places has dropped by 28

and there has been a decrease of 18 residents from 1,128. Since March 2000, the number of care homes offering services in this client group has dropped by 20, from 132. However, in the same period the number of places has fallen by just 3 and there has been an increase in the number of residents, from 1,094 to 1,110 as chart 4 illustrates. The average size of a care home in March 2000 was 9 places.

Table 15 omits any homes that have deregistered to become housing support services (more information on those can be found in annex F).
