NB: some results may be subject to large percentage sampling errors, being based on small numbers of cases - hence the apparent fluctuations in the "Surface rail" figures, for example. The "All modes" estimate of 7,210 for 1998/2000 has a "95% confidence interval" of +/- 583 miles, so the apparent fall in 2002/2003 may just reflect sampling variability.
