ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
The team would like to thank all the young people, parents and teachers who took part in this study either through returning questionnaires or via interviews. Without their honest opinions we would not have had such rich material to work with. Thanks are also due to the schools that took part who accommodated the research team in times when workloads were high and competing priorities were numerous. The four authorities that took part facilitated access to schools and this assisted in moving the project along.
We would also like to record our appreciation for the work contributed by other colleagues. In particular we would like to thank Edna Sommerville for unfailing administrative support, Alastair Christie of Directions in Diversity and Malcolm Parnell for assisting in the proofreading.
