10. Car journeys: whether paid for parking ( Table 14)

10.1 Table 14 provides information about the cost, location and duration of car parking. For each stage of a journey made as the driver of a car, the interviewer asked "did you pay for parking at the end of that part of the journey?" and, for those who said yes, the interviewer asked "where did you park the vehicle?" The interviewer also asked (of all except those who said that they used a residential parking permit) "how much did you pay?" and "how long did you stay at that parking place?" From April to December 2003, just under 3% of drivers paid for parking at the end of their journey. Figures for the rest of the table are based on fewer than 300 responses, so are subject to large sampling errors.

10.2 Of those who paid for parking, approximately two-thirds did so in a commercial car park. One-sixth used a space on the street, which they had to pay for, and one-twelfth paid for parking in a car park provided by their employer or college, etc.

10.3 Part (c) of the table shows that one sixth of those who paid, paid up to 50p. Approximately half paid between 50p and 2, and a third paid over 2. Part (d) shows that 12% of those who paid for parking parked for up to an hour at the end of their journey, in a slot they had paid for. Similar proportions (22-24%) parked for 1-2 hours, for 2-3 hours, and for 3-5 hours. 19% parked for over 5 hours.
