"Cancer Service Improvement Programme (CSIP) supports cancer networks to redesign cancer services across all three regions in Scotland. Results demonstrate reductions in delays and improved services. The team are now encouraging services to adopt core number of successful changes to reach national target, December 2005."

The Cancer Service Improvement Programme has identified a number of high-impact changes across the patient's journey through its work with hundreds of NHS clinical teams. The adoption of these changes across the NHS in Scotland would result in a major improvement in patient and staff experience, clinical outcomes and service delivery and waiting times could be significantly reduced.

Through our improvement work and consultation with staff in NHSScotland, we have consistently been asked:

"Which change ideas will make the biggest impact to the service?" and "What potential benefits for patients and working lives will be achieved?"

This simple-step guide aims to illustrate high-impact changes which, if implemented, can significantly reduce delays in the whole system of cancer service care achieving benefits for patients, their families and for staff.

From February 2005, we are making the Top 20 Actions for Change widely available to the Scottish NHS to support a faster pace of change across Scotland by encouraging teams to adopt successful improvements rather than re-invent the wheel.

This work will be fully supported by the Cancer Service Improvement Programme's Regional Facilitators. The team of national facilitators is ready to help you implement the changes appropriate to your local area.

The experience of 25,000 patients diagnosed with cancer per year in Scotland could be improved if each and every cancer team implemented these changes.

Patient and Carer Involvement

"I'm so glad to see some of the issues I mentioned at the mapping being addressed in the work that is being taken forward."
Patient from Fife involved in Mapping Event

Since everything we do should be focused on patients and their carers, they have been involved in the development of the improvement plan from the beginning. Interview techniques that allow us to simply listen to the patients' and carers' stories about their journey through their pathway of care are an extremely powerful tool. These techniques also provide us with a clearer idea of their needs and they help teams see actions that need to be taken to add benefits.

Staff at grass-roots level along with patients and their families have worked together to highlight where further improvements to cancer services can be made.

Reassuringly, issues and concerns highlighted within the patient stories very much reflect those raised by staff providing the service and therefore these shared concerns are being acted upon to achieve an improved outcome.
