What jobs are there in the Health Service?

The NHS in Scotland (NHSScotland) is one of the largest employers in Scotland with over 140,000 staff in a huge variety of jobs. The sheer variety of occupations and number involved may surprise you, all of which contribute to healthcare in one way or another.

The development of new technologies and cultural changes are having a dramatic effect on the delivery of healthcare in 21st-century Scotland.

The qualifications outlined for entry to a particular course or training programme are generally the minimum standard expected.

Entry requirements to some colleges or universities can differ to what is listed so it is worth contacting your local establishment directly using the contact details provided.

MEDICAL ILLUSTRATORS

Medical Illustration is a generic term for a group of visual media specialists who work within NHSScotland. The majority of staff work within General Hospitals or Medical Schools. They provide an essential clinical support service to staff such as doctors, nurses, scientists and allied health professionals. The group consists of the following three professional staff:

Clinical Photographers/ Videographers produce images which can be used as an aid to diagnosis and treatment for case notes and serial records. The photographer will be required to work in wards, clinics and operating theatres etc. The photographer has direct responsibility for referred patients;

Graphic Designers carry out design projects for a broad range of health service staff and design an essential range of visual communication material including scientific posters, information booklets and brochures, patient information posters, annual reports etc. They work from a dedicated design studio within the hospital or medical school; and

Medical Artists specialise in the production of clinical art work. They require an in depth knowledge of Anatomy, Physiology and disease conditions which ensures that they can produce clinically correct art and design material for use in areas such as medical text books, clinical teaching posters, artwork for clinical videos and computer based training programs etc. They work directly with medical and surgical consultants in locations throughout the hospital or medical school.

Note - In September 2004 Clinical Photographers were granted State Registration status by the Health Professions Council (HPC). The register will be formalised during 2005.

An HND in Photography, Graphic Design or Art will facilitate entry to a trainee post in Clinical Photography or Graphic Design within a health service or medical school department where students can undertake a distance learning course leading to a professional qualification.

An alternative route allows an HND student to achieve a professional qualification by enrolling on a full-time university course.

Age not specified.

HND in Photography or Graphic Design.

Potential students should in the first instance contact their local college to ascertain that appropriate HND courses are being offered.

Students who hold a relevant HND in Photography or Graphic Design have two options:

•secure a full-time trainee Clinical Photography or Design post within a hospital or medical school department where, in addition to receiving in service training, they will be able to register for a three year distance learning course leading to a BSc in Medical Illustration. This will qualify them to obtain full time Clinical Photography or Design post; and

•students who do not wish to take a trainee post but who hold a relevant HND can enrol on a full time university course which will lead to a BSc in Medical Illustration. This course includes a nine month secondment for work placement experience within approved Medical Illustration Departments. On successful completion of the BSc programme students will be qualified to obtain a full time Clinical Photography or Design Post.

Individuals who already hold a Degree in Photography but are not qualified to be Clinical Photographers should secure a full time trainee clinical photography post with the appropriate Department and complete the Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Illustration.

This qualification will allow them to obtain a full time clinical photography post.

Diploma in Medical Art

This is a specialised qualification which is offered by the Medical Arts Association of Great Britain. Any potential candidates who wish to undertake this qualification are advised to make direct contact with the Association in order to obtain the current entry qualification and course programme information.
