Appendix F: Examples of codes of conduct of marching organisations
Loyal Orange Order - rules governing church parades and demonstrations
1. Orange and Royal Arch Purple Colours only shall be worn at Church Parades and Demonstrations.
2. At all Demonstrations, the Union Jack shall be carried at the head of the procession.
3. No intoxicating liquor will be admitted to the field or park at any time.
4. Bands engaged for Church Parades must give an undertaking that only recognisable Hymn tunes will be played.
5. Ladies shall walk with the male members of their own District at all Church Parades.
6. During the time the public meeting is going on at a Demonstration bands will not play in the park; drumming is also forbidden.
7. A County Grand Lodge, District or Private Lodge traversing any route other than that sanctioned by a local authority will be dealt with by the County Grand Lodge.
8. A District or Private Lodge which is not forward when the procession moves off falls in at the rear. This applies to both inward and outward journeys.
9. Dancing or jazzing with banners is strictly prohibited. An offending lodge will not be permitted to carry its banner for 2 succeeding Demonstrations.
10. No intoxicating liquor shall be consumed while in the ranks or when wearing colours out with the procession and the use of improper language at all time is forbidden.
11. All Bands engaged must sign the Condition of Engagement Form, and adhere strictly to the rules thereon. The District Chief Marshal will be held responsible for any breach of this rule.
12. The instructions of the County and Grand Lodge Marshals must be obeyed at all times.
13. The wearing of favours is strictly forbidden.
14. All Lodges must keep strictly to the left hand of the road, except on one way streets where the right hand side of the road will be traversed and members will march in military formation 3 abreast.
15. Marshals must, with courtesy and attention, give facilities to the general public for entry to stations, buses etc
16. Bands taking part in Orange Church Parades must also attend the Church Services.
17. Juvenile and Juniors will not be permitted to take part in adult demonstrations but Junior can parade where they are parading as a Lodge which has been granted permission by the Grand Lodge or where appropriate, the County Grand Lodge. Juvenile and Junior members may be allowed to take part in adult Church parades held under the auspices of the District to which they belong. Juveniles between the ages of 11 and 15, whose District does not have a Junior Lodge, may carry banner cords wearing colours at demonstrations.
18. Any Band found guilty of improper conduct during an Orange Parade will be dealt with through the agreed procedure.
19. Deacon poles, batons or canes are not allowed to be carried between Marshals or Band Marshals.
20. Members should refrain from smoking while wearing collarettes or chains of Office.
21. District Standards may be carried at Grand Lodge Church Parades.
22. Every member participating in a Church Parade must enter and participate in the Service.
Apprentice Boys of Derry - members' code of conduct
1. All member clubs and their respective members and guests shall not even when provoked, engage in any action that shames or disgraces their club or the association.
2. All member clubs and their respective members and guests shall at all times promote a sense of unity and friendship towards fellow clubs and members.
3. On arrival for a parade no member of a club or guest should leave their mode of transport carrying any form of alcohol.
4. Whilst you are in a marshalling area or on the parade route or at dispersal point of any parade no members or guests of your club shall be seen to be urinating in a public place.
5. When attending the May Rally all member clubs are expected to attend public speeches before departing for their return parades, at the December church service all our member clubs and guests are expected in the church for the service.
6. No member clubs shall have their club colour party or any member or guest of their club dressed in or displaying any paramilitary colours or emblems breaching the Terrorism Act 2000.
