National Objectives for Social Work Services in the Criminal Justice System: Standards - Community Service
CHAPTER 5: WORK PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
70.Standards of performance and behaviour must be set at an attainable level for each offender.
71.Each offender must be made aware of these required standards.
72.In considering what constitutes satisfactory performance of work, the following criteria apply:
72.1quality of performance the work done and the manner in which it is done conforms to the standards laid down by the placement agency for the work in question;
72.2work effort offenders are expected to apply themselves energetically and consistently to the demands of whatever work is required of them by the placement agency;
72.3behaviour and attitudes offenders are expected to conduct themselves on work placements in such a way as to demonstrate respect for the rights of others and a willingness to co-operate with others in the work placement agency.
73.If an offender fails to meet required performance standards, every reasonable effort should be made to resolve the difficulty within the placement agency. If this is not possible, and the unsatisfactory performance persists or is of a serious nature, the matter must be reported without delay to the Community Service Officer. If, meantime, the agency feels unable to tolerate the conduct of the offender at the work placement any longer, they may require the offender to leave the placement forthwith: in which event the agency must report what happened to the Community Service Officer as soon as possible.
74.It will be for the Community Service Officer to investigate the circumstances of each reported failure on the part of the offender to meet required performance standards, assess the culpability of the offender and, if the failure in unacceptable, decide on what disciplinary action to take.
