Scottish Vacant and Derelict Land Survey 2004

5 Previous uses of derelict and urban vacant land

5.1 The previous uses of derelict and urban vacant sites are shown in Table 10. Former agricultural land should only be included if it is characterised by specific unsightliness or neglect. However, Local Authorities have explained that in some instances former agricultural land is released for development and is then classed as vacant when either the land is prepared for development or development starts on the land.

5.2 The previous use was unknown for 1,042 hectares of land (6 per cent of the total amount of derelict and 19 per cent of the total amount of urban vacant land recorded in 2004). Where the previous use is known, 27 per cent of derelict land recorded in 2004 had been previously used for defence (1,959 hectares), and a further 27 per cent for mineral activity (1,941 hectares). The most common previous use for recorded urban vacant land, where previous use is known, was agriculture (28 per cent, or 677 hectares) and the second most common previous use was residential development, accounting for 15 per cent of recorded urban vacant land (377 hectares).

5.3 Chart 4 shows the 20 most common previous uses of derelict and urban vacant land, ranked by area.
