CHAPTER FOUR PROFILE OF SAMPLE
4.1 This section of the report will summarise the profile of respondents in terms of their overall demographics and characteristics. Consistent across all waves of research, the sample is structured to be representative of the Scottish population.
AGE
4.2 In line with the structure of
mruk's Scottish In-home Omnibus, a good spread of age ranges were represented within the sample structure.

GENDER
4.3 The achieved sample for September 2004 Omnibus was split evenly across genders, with half of interviews being undertaken with male respondents, and half with female respondents.
SOCIO ECONOMIC GROUP
4.4 In line with the Scottish adult population, around 4 in 10 interviews were undertaken with ABC1's, with the remainder (59%) being from the C2DE socio economic groupings.

EMPLOYMENT STATUS

4.5 Overall, just over half of the sample were in some form of employment, with around 4 in 10 not being employed.
HOUSING TENURE
4.6 Just over half of the sample were owner occupiers, with a slightly lower proportion currently renting.
GEOGRAPHIC AREA

4.7 The above figure details the breakdown of the achieved interviews across geographic regions in Scotland, in line with the Scottish population, a higher proportion of interviews were undertaken in the East and West in comparison to the North.
SMOKING STATUS

4.8 Critical to understanding research findings in more detail, all respondents were asked to indicate their current smoking status.
4.9 Overall, almost half of the sample claimed to be current smokers, with just over a third indicating that they have never smoked. Around a fifth stated that they had smoked in the past, but now considered themselves to be non smokers.
4.10 Those who indicated that they were a current smoker were more likely to be aged 25 - 34 years (54%) and be from the DE socio economic group (57%).
