Smoking in Public Places
A Consultation on Reducing Exposure to Second Hand Smoke
Report of an Omnibus Survey
CHAPTER THREE RESEARCH METHOD
3.1 Given the nature of the objectives, an in-home omnibus approach was considered to be the most cost effective methodology in addressing the objectives, with
mruk's in-home Scottish omnibus being utilised.
3.2 As is standard with
mruk's Scottish in-home omnibus, a target of 1000 in-home interviews are set each month with adults across Scotland aged 16+ years. In order to ensure a geographic spread, a total of 52 constituency based sampling points are selected. Interviewing is conducted on a random route basis within each of the sampling points, with quotas being established for age, gender and socio economic group in order to ensure a representative spread of the population. The questionnaire was developed in conjunction with the Scottish Executive and also considered questions asked within the consultation document itself. All interviews were undertaken by
mruk's own IQCS (Interviewer Quality Control Scheme) accredited fieldforce.
3.3 All data analysis was conducted by our in-house data analysis team based in our Glasgow office, with the data being subject to a number of range and logic checks to ensure it validity. Fieldwork for this stage of research was undertaken between the 30
th August and the 5
th September 2004.
