care and repair STANDARDS AND GUIDANCE

Section Five: Key Principles

In the provision of core activities, three key principles have been identified which express the ethos of Care and Repair services. These underpin the development of the standards and guidance, with each Care and Repair service aspiring to ensure:

  • flexibility and choice
  • privacy and trust
  • equality and diversity

Flexibility and Choice

Care and Repair services are individually tailored to the needs of each client, with the majority of activities being delivered within the client's own home. This client focussed approach is a central characteristic of Care and Repair, with every client's needs being different and resulting in an individual package of services. The assistance provided can range from signposting, through more detailed information and advice, to the management of large scale building works. The home based nature of many aspects of Care and Repair services lends flexibility and is central to its success. The standards and guidance outlined in this document recognise the importance of these tailored activities, and as such attempt not to be over prescriptive with regard to the way in which services are delivered on a day to day basis.

Privacy and Trust

Respecting the privacy of clients accessing Care and Repair services is an essential component of their activities. With many of the activities undertaken by Care and Repair requiring personal information to be provided, or taking place in the client's own home, Care and Repair services clearly recognise the importance of ensuring that clients feel comfortable with disclosing personal information, and are able to trust staff within their own home. Whilst policies on privacy and confidentiality are specified as part of the standards, it is recognised that building trust and focussing on creating positive relationships between clients and staff is just as important in ensuring that clients are convinced of the importance which Care and Repair services attach to privacy and confidentiality of information.

Equality and Diversity

Underpinning the standards and guidance is a clear commitment to ensuring that all individuals within the target group are aware of the services offered by Care and Repair and are able to access these when required. Care and Repair services aim to offer the highest quality assistance to all individuals within the target group, regardless of gender, sexuality, ethnicity, disability, age or any other factor, and aim to treat all clients with the same respect and dignity. Ensuring that all of those who are in need of assistance feel confident in approaching Care and Repair services is essential and all services should be committed to taking the necessary steps to ensure this.
