Source: Care Home Census Statistical Return March 2004

In March 2004 there were 111 homes registered with the Care Commission providing 1,161 places for adults with mental health problems. 90 of those homes were run by the voluntary sector. Those homes had an average of 9 registered places each and are smaller than homes for adults with mental health problems in the local authority and private sectors.

The overall occupancy rate in care homes for mental health problems was 91.6 per cent. This is almost unchanged on the occupancy level for September 2003 (91.7 per cent).

The 111 care homes registered are spread geographically across 22 different local authorities in Scotland. However a large number are concentrated within specific areas (17 in Aberdeen City, 22 in Edinburgh City and 24 in Glasgow City). As before Table 12 omits any homes that have deregistered to become housing support services (more information on those can be found in annex G).

The past three years have seen the number of homes for adults with mental health problems decrease from 127 in 2001 to 111 by March 2004. The number of residents in those homes has also fallen. There was just under a 7 per cent fall during the same period from 1,125 to 1,051.
