In March 2004 there were 851 places in 50 care homes for adults with physical disabilities. Those places were spread across 18 local authorities. 42 of these 50 registered care homes for adults with physical disabilities were in the voluntary sector.
The number of registered places fell by 1.8 per cent between September 2003 and March 2004. Altogether there has been a drop in registered places of 113 (11.7 per cent) during the three years up until 2004. Table 10 omits any homes that deregistered to become Housing Support services (more information on those can be found in annex G).
Of the 851 places registered, 739 (86.8 per cent) were occupied on census night. 87 places were vacant and 25 were unavailable. The overall occupancy rate in care homes for adults with physical disabilities was 89.8 per cent. This has decreased by 1.9 per cent since September 2003 when occupied and unavailable places accounted for 91.7 per cent of all registered places.
736 of the available care home places for adults with physical disabilities (89 per cent) were in single rooms (rooms with only one place registered). 73 per cent of all available places (605) have ensuite facilities. Overall 69 per cent of places for this client group are in single rooms with ensuite facilities (an increase of 6 per cent since September 2003).
