BETTER BEHAVIOUR: PROMOTING POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR IN SCOTTISH SCHOOLS
RESEARCH REVIEW
New research being conducted in Scotland, commissioned by the Scottish Executive, will support future evidence-based policy making and practice.
The co-operation and partnership with schools and authorities is essential to the quality of research and depth of understanding of issues affecting the education community in Scotland. We very much appreciate the efforts of staff in schools and authorities to support this work. Findings of research commissioned by the Executive can be found on www.scotland.gov.uk/insight.
Research being undertaken or developed in 2004/05 in relation to promoting positive behaviour:
Teachers Perceptions of Indiscipline and Additional Support Staff in Schools
Pamela Munn of Edinburgh University has conducted a third survey on teacher's perceptions of indicispline in schools, following two previous studies in 1990 and 1996. The survey is one part of a wider study on the deployment of additional staff to promote positive behaviour in schools, which will report later in 2004. Jaqui Horsburgh of Stockbridge Primary, Sheila Ainslie of East Lothian Council and Yvonne Carling of Fife Council have joined SEED on the advisory group for the research.

Exploring the Links Between Mental Health and Behaviour
Research has been commissioned from the Rowan Group of Aberdeen University to explore how schools identify and respond to behaviour issues that may be caused by emotional health problems, and how authorities and other agencies support schools in this regard. The research will complete in 2005.
Anne-Marie Graeme of South Lanarkshire Council, Mona McCulloch of South Ayrshire Council and David Mackay of East Dunbartonshire Council, have joined SEED on the advisory group for the research project and will bring their school and authority experience to inform the research.

Positive Behaviour in the Early Years
A new research project will seek to assess whether behaviour issues in pre-school and early primary are rising, and the perceptions of staff of their ability to manage behaviour issues in these settings. The research will get underway later this year and will report during 2005.
