UK results of the Research and Development survey are published in the ONS publication "Research and Development in the UK - Business Monitor MA14".

http://www.statistics.gov.uk/downloads/theme_commerce/MA14_2002.pdf

The ONS first publish the UK data on the Business Monitor then they perform special analysis on the Scottish firms in the survey. The results of the special analysis form the basis of this report and tables comparing it with the UK final results are published in Appendix 3.

Economic Trends article published September 2004 on "Research and Experimental Development (R&D) Statistics 2002" was the source of data on expenditure and employment data on research and development activity, in particular in the higher education and government sectors. http://www.statistics.gov.uk/cci/article.asp?ID=940

Employment data came from 2 different sources: employment by industry came from the Annual Business Inquiry and employment by job type came from the Labour Force Survey.

Population data came from the GRO(Scotland) website
