Social Focus on Disability 2004
Introduction
This Social Focus publication is the fourth in a series of social statistics publications and explores the characteristics and position of disabled people in Scotland. The publication follows from the 2003 European Year of Disabled People and also contributes to the Scottish Executive's commitment to develop and publish statistics across the different equality groups.
For the first time, statistics on Scotland's disabled population is being published in a single, comprehensive document. The publication collates material from a range of survey and data sources including the Scottish Household Survey, the Labour Force Survey and the 2001 Census. The publication is intended as an introduction and we recognise that it is not exhaustive; there are other data sources and research available. However to ensure reliability and integrity of the statistics, we have chosen to use, primarily, National Statistics sources. The publication does not try to provide commentary of the causes and solutions to the differences illustrated.
There are eight chapters each containing a series of tables and charts presenting statistics on disabled people across a broad range of different parameters. The first chapter provides information on the demographics of disability in Scotland. Further chapters go on to explore the position of disabled people in terms of housing, civic society, education, employment, health and care, income and benefits, and transport.
This is only part of our long term programme to improve the range of available information and access to it. We will continue to consult with users and to publish material which provides information on the position of equality groups in Scotland.
The publication is available both in hard copy and on the web ( www.scotland.gov.uk/socialfocusondisability). Copies in Braille and on audio tape are available on request.
Contact details for chapter authors and key data providers have been provided at the end of each chapter, along with a reference section containing useful websites and publications.
We hope that you find this an informative, useful and interesting publication.
