Notes:

1. 'Registered in . . .' - The number of care homes by client group that were open on a particular census night.
March 2002- 2,048 Registered Homes
March 2003 - 1,624 Registered Homes
September 2003 - 1,576 Registered Homes.

2. Closed - The number of care homes by client group that have closed during a particular census period (62 during March 2002-March 2003 and 14 during March 2003-September 2003).

3. Deregistered - The number of care homes that deregistered with the Care Commission by client group during the census period to become a Housing Support Service. These homes have been omitted from the rest of the survey. 369 homes deregistered between March 2002 and March 2003 and a further 41 deregistered between March 2003 and September 2003.

4. Opened - The number of care homes that have opened and registered with the Care Commission by client group during a particular census period. 7 new homes registered with the Care Commission between March 2002 and March 2003. A further 7 newly registered in- between March 2003 and September 2003.

A total of 410 homes have therefore deregistered with the Care Commission during the eighteen months leading up until the end of September 2003. This number is expected to increase by the end of the next census period of March 2004. Of those 410 deregistrations to Housing support -

8 were primarily intended for Older People
13 were primarily for adults with physical disabilities or illnesses
82 were primarily for adults with mental health problems
265 were primarily for adults with learning disabilities
42 were primarily for adults in other client groups
