Notes:

1. Number of Registered Places - The number of places registered with the Care Commission on census night September 2003 in homes for older people.

2. Occupied, Vacant, Unavailable - The number of places occupied, vacant or unavailable in care homes on census night. Places can be unavailable due to redecoration, building works, flooding, reduced staffing, redesignation of double rooms to single rooms and other reasons.

3. Total - The total number of vacant, occupied and unavailable places.

4. (%) Occupancy Rate - The occupancy rate is the percentage of places in care homes that are either occupied or unavailable. The overall occupancy rate for Scotland is 93 per cent.

5. (%) Change - This is the change in occupancy rate for each local authority between March 2003 and September 2003. For Scotland overall the occupancy level remains unchanged.
