The Scottish Executive has today published "Pupils in Scotland, September 2003", containing the results of the latest annual pupil census in publicly funded schools in Scotland.

The main findings for September 2003 are:

Primary

  • There were 2,248 primary schools, a reduction of ten from 2002.
  • There were 406,015 pupils in primary schools, a two per cent reduction from 2002.
  • The average class size was 23.7, down from 24.0 in 2002.
  • There were 13,582 pupils with a Record of Needs or Individualised Education Plan, about three per cent of pupils.

Secondary

  • There were 386 secondary schools, the same as in 2002.
  • There were 318,427 pupils in secondary schools, a 0.5 per cent increase from 2002.
  • There were 9,684 pupils with a Record of Needs or Individualised Education Plan, about three per cent of pupils.
  • About 76 per cent of pupils in S3 stayed on until S5.

Special

  • There were 192 special schools or units, an increase of three from 2002.
  • There were 7,680 pupils in special schools, a four per cent reduction from 2002.
