SCOTTISH INDEX OF MULTIPLE DEPRIVATION 2004: SUMMARY TECHNICAL REPORT
Chapter 5: Presentation of Results
The results of the analyses are presented across 7 indices. In addition to the overall index of multiple deprivation, each individual domain is also published. In all cases the data zones are ranked from 1 (the most deprived) to 6,505 (the least deprived). These ranks show how each data zone compares with any other.
In addition to the final scores and ranking for each data zone across each domain, the indicator information will also be made available - subject to confidentiality constraints. This means that in some cases, such as the Current Income and Employment domains, the indicators will be published as an aggregate total. In other domains, individual indicators may be presented, albeit with some rounding or adjustment. These data are presented in response to user requests, however users are strongly advised against selecting individual indicators and drawing conclusions about area deprivation. The indicators chosen represent specific sub-groups within the population and it is only when combined with the other indicators in a domain that a measure of deprivation allowing comparison across different areas can be made.
The various datasets, scores and ranks will be made available through an interactive website www.scotland.gov.uk/SIMD2004Mapping and through the Scottish Neighbourhood Statistics (SNS) internet site. 9
The interactive website is key to allowing users to make sense of the range of data available across the 6,505 data zones. The data zones within each Local Authority will be presented and users will be able to select the domain or multiple measure they are interested in and a thematic map will show how relative deprivation is spread out across the selected LA. The site will also link to an excel spreadsheet where users can access the available indicator data, the scores and ranks for each data zone across each of the domains.
The SNS internet site will also enable users to link the SIMD ranks for a data zone to other relevant information at the same geographic level.
The combination of the interactive website and the SNS internet site will provide users with options ranging from simple assessment of the SIMD rank through to analysis of the indicator data behind the SIMD, through to incorporating the data / scores / ranks from the SIMD with other data at small area level to inform specific analyses.
Appendix B provides a brief overview at Local Authority level :
- The spread across LAs of those data zones that are in the most deprived 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% of areas across Scotland. Analysis by population is also provided.
- The number of income and employment deprived people in each LA.
