Effective Interventions Unit
Programme 2004-2005

E AVAILABILITY

Progress in April 2003 - March 2004

  • We undertook a review of existing research evidence on the policing of local low-level dealing. This also drew on early findings from EIU visits to Scottish police forces.

  • We also commenced work on a more detailed study of drug markets in three 'case study' areas. So far this has included interviews with a range of police officers and local drug service providers in the case study areas. This study will also be informed by interviews with drug users and members of the wider community, in the case study areas.

Plans for April 2004 -March 2005

  • A review of existing research evidence on the policing of local low-level dealing, 'Reducing the impact of local drug markets', drawing also on early findings from our force visits, will be published in April 2004.

  • We will continue with our case study research, which will include the completion of in-house work with the police and local service providers. It will also include the commissioning of qualitative work with drug users and the wider community, in May 2004. We hope to publish a report drawing all of these strands of the case study research by summer 2005.
