COASTAL MANAGEMENT IN FIFE

Fife Council was the first Scottish local authority to prepare a Shoreline Management Plan (SMP) for its entire coastline, including the Forth and Tay estuaries. The plan, jointly funded by Scottish Natural Heritage and Historic Scotland, was published in 1999.
The SMP has enabled understanding of coastal processes, prediction of the evolution of the coast, identification of assets under threat and, most importantly, has facilitated consultation and successful partnership working with all relevant coastal interests. It has considered all areas of interest, including land use planning, agriculture and fisheries, environmental issues, business and tourism, and archaeology and the built environment. The Council now has a strategic plan with agreed policies along the various stretches of coastline.
Since the SMP was published, a 5.2 million project to protect the villages of East & West Wemyss and Dysart from serious coastal erosion has been completed. Further studies are planned.
Fife Council has also undertaken a strategic leisure study of 37 Fife harbours. Each was assessed against current attributes and future leisure market potential.
The Scottish East Coast/Northern Europe cruising market was investigated, Fife being identified as strategically well placed to capitalise on this.
Outline proposals based on assessed harbour leisure development potentials emphasise dependence on partnerships between key stakeholders and other East Coast areas.
Fife Council will decide how to progress these proposals.
