Scottish Coastal Forum: Current ICZM initiatives: Spring 2004

DUNDEE AREA - BROUGHTY FERRY BEACH MANAGEMENT GROUP
Dundee City Council, in conjunction with Broughty Ferry Community Council, has launched a Beach Management Group with an initial membership including Scottish Natural Heritage, Clean Coast Scotland and the Tay Estuary Forum. From time to time other groups are being brought in for specific subject areas. The "beach" area stretches from the City boundary in the east to Stannergate (at the Port).
The Group's remit is to develop an integrated Beach Management Plan which will serve as a component to a future Integrated Coastal Zone Management Plan being developed by the Tay Estuary Forum. It will address:
Coastal protection.
Beach and foreshore operations including beach cleaning.
Potential of the beach for tourism, and leisure and recreation in general.
Yellow and Blue Flag initiatives.
Wider interpretation of the beach and the foreshore, including beach habitat and Local Nature Reserve.
The Group hopes to build on the improvement to water quality and the foreshore, which have been achieved following investment in the local wastewater treatment plant.
Already the Group has proved to be an excellent forum for discussion. It has already resolved a number of shorter-term problems and is now looking at the longer-term policy and key issues such as new nature conservation designations.
