The 55 km Angus coastline is one of the area's most important assets extending from Montrose to Monifieth. The wider coastal area is home to around 50% of the Angus population and is a significant communications corridor for road, rail and sea as well as containing important employment centres at Arbroath and Montrose and contributing to the tourism industry. It also contains a number of sites protected for their natural and historic interest.
Angus Council is developing a Shoreline Management Plan that will provide the basis for sustainable shoreline management policies over the next 50 years. It covers from Milton Ness north of St Cyrus down to the Dighty Burn south of Monifieth.
In preparing an Angus-wide Local Plan the shoreline management policies have been taken into account along with a sustainable development approach to land use policies.
Part of Route 1 of the Sustrans National Cycle network follows the Angus coast and new and improved coastal paths are being developed to increase access to the countryside for walking and cycling. The upgrading of recreation facilities at the beach fronts at Monifieth, Arbroath and Montrose has increased visitor enjoyment. Progress is being made towards gaining the Seaside Award for Montrose with the hope of extending this to other coastal towns.
