Argyll's Coastal Resource - Coastal Framework Plans through partnership
The quality and diversity of Argyll and Bute's coast and inshore waters makes our coastal area one of our prime assets. Home to a large proportion of our population, our indented coastline, consisting of islands and numerous sea lochs, is longer than that of France. Our coastal area provides a unique resource from which our present and future economic and social well being can be derived, if properly managed.
It is increasingly recognised that there is a need to adopt a more pro-active and integrated approach to secure the sustainable use of our marine resource.
As such, the Structure Plan identifies the need for the Council, with support from its partners, to complete Coastal Framework Plans for key loch systems under pressure. At present a funding package is being put together to take this action forward.
The first building blocks towards integrated Coastal Framework Plans are being put in place through the Argyll Marine Natura Project. Run by the Council, in partnership with Scottish Natural Heritage, it aims to promote the sustainable development and management of the Firth of Lorn and Loch Creran Marine Special Areas of Conservation through the active participation of the local users of the sites including fishermen, the aquaculture industry, dive operators and other businesses. The ultimate goal is the production of a Management Plan for these two European designated sites. More information is available at
