Coastal management in North Ayrshire Council
North Ayrshire's coastal landscape is one of its greatest assets for environmental reasons, tourism and for the economy of its coastal communities. In accordance with NPPG13, Coastal Planning, the Council recognises the importance of the coast within its Local Plans.
The Council will examine specific issues pertaining to the management of the coast rather than prepare a shoreline management plan. These issues range from assessment of flood risk, to developed and potential development land, to general management of the shoreline and its defences and the assessment of options for maintaining existing defences. The Council has entered into a consultancy agreement with Posford Haskoning, to strengthen its ability to manage the coast.
As a result of this, and following extensive public consultation, a new coastal flood-prevention scheme has been constructed in Largs that offers the highest level of protection, against water levels which statistics show will only occur once every 250 years.
Whilst the overriding focus of the scheme has been the provision of formidable long-lasting protection against floods and storms, the Council has been aware of the need to retain the character and attractiveness of the promenade.
A major study of the coastal strip between Ardrossan and Irvine is underway and a number of other studies are planned within an overall context of managing the coast.
