Dumfries and Galloway's coast

In recent years there has been an increasing dialogue between all those with an interest in the coastal and marine areas of Dumfries and Galloway. A culture of consultation is being fostered between the local authorities and local communities. This has seen the development of a comprehensive Local Biodiversity Action Plan for coastal and marine habitats and is now leading to the development of a Shoreline Management Plan (SMP).

Developing a SMP was highlighted as a key action in the Solway Firth Strategy and the Inner Solway European Marine Site Management Plan. The high conservation value of the coastline has led to a proactive partnership between the Council and Scottish Natural Heritage.

The objectives are to:

  • Define, in general terms, the risks to people and the developed, historic and natural environment.

  • Identify the preferred policies for managing these risks over the next 50 years.

  • Identify the consequences of implementing the preferred policies.

  • Set out procedures for monitoring the effectiveness of the policies.

  • Ensure that future land use and development takes due account of the risks and the preferred policies.
