School Boards: guide to the legislation
Surplus Funds | 17A. (1) Where, at the end of the financial year, the total amount of monies made available to a School Board under subsection (2) of section 17 of this Act is less than the amount determined under subsection (1) of that section, the education authority shall make available to the School Board the amount by which the total amount of monies so made available is less than the amount so determined to be applied by the Board at their discretion, taking account of the views of the headteacher, at such time as they think fit for the benefit of the school. |
Section 17A: SURPLUS FUNDS Under section 17, monies are made available to a School Board by the education authority to meet administrative and other expenses and for carrying out any functions delegated to the Board. Section 17A provides that if the amount provided to the School Board during the course of the year is less than the amount determined under section 17(1), the education authority will make the surplus funds available to the School Board. This money must be used for the benefit of the school. The provision gives School Boards discretion to determine what the money should be spent on, after taking account of the views of the headteacher. The money might be used, for example, to buy additional books or classroom equipment for the school. |
