3 Ownership of derelict and urban vacant land
3.1 Table 6 shows ownership of derelict and urban vacant sites, including a comparison of data from 1996 and 2003. For derelict land, single private ownership is most common (75 per cent in 2003, compared with 61 per cent in 1996). In 2003, 7 per cent of derelict or urban vacant land where ownership was known was in multiple ownership. 1,906 hectares of land (18 per cent of the total amount of derelict and urban vacant land recorded in 2003) had one or more unknown owners. Since 1996, known public ownership of derelict land has fallen by 1,000 hectares, while known private ownership increased by over 600 hectares.
